A neighbour found this dead hornet on their patio. You can see how reducing the size of a hive entrance will help protect the interior if they come raiding, though small entrances also leads to poor ventilation and traffic jams, so you only reduce entrances when necessary.

European hornet and honeybees

I believe it is the relatively good natured native European hornet, vespa crabro. Luckily, not the Asian hornet which we are all expecting to arrive from France soon, and are on the alert for.

Nevertheless, these beautiful and impressive predators have been known to wipe out honeybee hives, so I need to watch out. Time to set up wasp traps.
